[A little bit of history]
• In the beginning, Riku was just an ordinary island boy who just wanted adventure and to discover new worlds with his two best friends. The night before they decided to start that adventure, Riku had opened the door to the heart of Destiny Islands which ultimately led to heartless infesting the world and tearing it apart. It was at this moment that Riku accepts the darkness, so when their home disappears—Riku ends up in Hollow Bastion. Here, he meets with Maleficent and he agrees to help her in exchange that she will help him find his friends. After reuniting with Sora, with the help of Maleficent manipulating him, Riku begins to believe that Sora no longer cares about him or Kairi, and decides to find Kairi on his own. When he finds Kairi she’s nothing but a shell because she had lost her heart. Riku then sets out to find a way to revive her, and is granted the ability to control heartless by Maleficent. Through Riku’s darkness infested heart and his increasing desire for power and strength Xehanort possesses him. Struggling to fight Xehanort off, Riku finds himself in the realm of darkness where King Mickey was. He regains his body once Sora defeats Xehanort’s Heartless, and helps Sora close the door of Kingdom Hearts—trapping him and King Mickey inside, and he tells Sora to take care of Kairi.
• Later, Riku uses a “corridor of darkness” to escape the realm of darkness. With this he appears in Castle Oblivion—where he is faced with his demons and faced with the darkness that consumed his heart. Throughout his travel in the castle, King Mickey’s light was there to guide Riku and to remind him that he was not evil or bad. Riku begins to realize that darkness had become a part of him, and he would fight anyone who tried to use his own darkness against him. Riku and Mickey find the remains of Xehanort’s Heartless in his heart, and defeat him. He escapes Castle Oblivion and takes the middle road (between light and dark). In the castle, Riku had met up with DiZ. DiZ later asks Riku to capture an Organization XIII member (Roxas) in beliefs that his capture would help Sora awaken.
Riku loses the first battle against Roxas and decides that in order to fight in the realm of darkness, he had to become one with that darkness. He is successful this time, however because he had allowed darkness into himself again he now had the physical appearance of Xehanort’s Heartless. He brings Roxas to DiZ, who places him in Twilight Town, and from then on Riku introduces himself as Ansem. Riku agrees to help DiZ to defeat Xemnas (Xehanort’s Nobody), but did it in hopes to restore Sora.
In the World that Never was, Riku reunites with Kairi… however, when she removes his hood she sees that he has the appearance of Xehanort’s Heartless. He and Kairi soon reunite with Sora (who is at first fooled by Riku’s appearance), but once Kairi tells Sora that it was Riku he was looking at, the Keyblade weilder breaks down in tears of happiness in finally finding his best friend. The friends are finally reunited! An explosion caused by DiZ’s machine restores Riku back to his “true form”, and he no longer shows the appearance of Xehanort’s Heartless. During their fight with Xemnas, Riku takes a brutal hit for Sora. After Xemnas’ defeat, the two friends sit and talk about their respect for one another and their friendship. Along to shore of the dark beach, Sora finds a letter that Kairi had written which opens a door to light, which leads to Destiny Islands, and the friends have finally come back home.
